Confiding in Maria  (Phil Cool)

Dylan's transition from acoustic to electric, and the hostile reception it received

Confiding in Maria

I’d dance with you Maria, but my hands are on fire

dizzy in the head, I just come down off the high wire

I’m walking like a sailor who’s just stepped back on land

So I’m in no shape to dance, you’ll understand.

I’d jam with you Maria but my carnival just crashed

Burstin into flames, it is and turning into ash

All my songs are protest, but some growd a little loud

But I don’t apologise to any crowd,

Though they cried Judas, Judas ,

Judas, better had you not been born

The crowd cried Judas, Judas,

take your thirty silver pieces and go home.

“The boys gone all electric, the boys gone off the tracks.

I’m gonna chop the cable, someone, shouted bring my axe”

These things I’m told Maria , and believe them to be true

But you can kill someone with kindness too.

Tonight a band of minstrels turned into gallant knights

Someone out there in the dark had me in their sights

But I was not to let this situation break my nerve

For Maria I did not come here to serve ,

They cried Judas, Judas, and so I had to humour them Maria

When they cried Judas, traitor

Why won’t you give us what we came to hear.

Instrumental

I’d dance with you Maria, but my hands are on fire.

Dizzy in the head, I just come down off the high wire

I’m walking like a sailor who’s just stepped back on land

So I’m in no shape to dance, you’ll understand.

And the crowd cried Judas, Judas

Judas better had you not been born

They cried Judas, Judas, take your thirty silver pieces and go home

The crowd cried Judas, Judas, and so I had to humour them Maria

When they cried Judas, traitor

I would not give them what they came to hear
